Injuries continue to plague the Indiana Fever. With the team fighting for a playoff spot without its star point guards, they have managed to overcome their absences.
They earned a much-needed 95-75 victory over the Seattle Storm to improve their record to 20-18 and return to sixth place in the WNBA standings. And in the midst of it all, Aliyah Boston made history.
Boston faces adversity head-on
With Sophie Cunningham, Aari McDonald, and Sydney Colson out for the rest of the season, the team has had to make several roster adjustments.
Meanwhile, the Fever is hopeful for the return of Caitlin Clark, who continues to recover from a groin injury, and Chloe Bibby, who is dealing with a knee injury. However, their returns are not confirmed, nor do they have a set date.
Despite this, while her teammates work on their recoveries, Aliyah Boston was one of the players who took the reins of the team and has become a key pillar for the Indiana Fever. Stephanie White spoke about this situation after the game:
“AB has been the one who has been most affected by all of our injuries,” she began. “All of the point guards know how to get her the ball. How to get it to her, and it’s not just getting it to her, it’s where you get it to her, giving it to her on time, on target. All that matters. Today, playing low to high instead of high to low. When she plays like that, there’s nobody that can stop her,” said the 48-year-old coach.
The truth is that, despite the absence of her teammates, the 23-year-old forward led the team to victory, scoring 27 points in 27 minutes and establishing herself as the top scorer of the night. She also added nine rebounds and three assists to complete her performance.
And as if that weren’t enough, Boston wrote her name in the franchise’s history books in the process. According to the Fever’s official X account, Aliyah became the youngest player in team history to reach 1,000 rebounds in her career.
This was not only demonstrated in the game against Seattle, but in her third year with the team, the three-time All-Star is better than ever. Averaging 15.2 points, 3.6 assists, and 8.3 rebounds per game, Boston has the highest numbers of her professional career.
Now, the Indiana Fever is preparing to travel and face the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday, the 29th, at Crypto.com Arena.
