In today’s day and age, professional athletes are under more scrutiny than ever before. Any comment they make can turn into a national story. Alexander Zverev is going through that process right now.
After defeating Ben Shelton in the 2026 US Open final on September 13, Zverev made a seemingly innocuous comment about Shelton’s girlfriend, Trinity Rodman, doing everything in her power to make it to the final despite having to play a NWSL match earlier in the day: “Trinity, I thought you had a match today, no? Well played to you too. You’re the lucky charm. Not today, but usually.“

Zverev’s comment wasn’t exactly welcomed by everyone. Shelton and Rodman fans in particular didn’t appreciate it, with some claiming that he was trying to flirt with her right in front of his rival’s face. Zverev probably didn’t give it much thought, but he was asked about it again this week and left things very clear.
“Trinity Rodman?! Oh, psh. No, no. Definitely not. I love Ben. I love his father. I love his whole family. I like Trinity quite a lot. I think whoever thinks that I was flirting or anything like that are idiots.”
When prompted by the journalist that some people think he was flirting, Zverev’s face was one of genuine shock. He couldn’t believe that a simple comment got taken so out of context.
