Trent Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool announced on Monday that the English full-back will not continue with the team after his contract expires at the end of the season. With the confirmation, the path is clear for him to join Real Madrid, who wanted him since January.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold has informed Liverpool FC of his intention to leave the club this summer upon the expiration of his current contract,” Liverpool posted on their X account.

Alexander-Arnold has been at Liverpool for more than 20 years and announced on social media his intention to fulfill his contract, until June 30, which will make him free to sign with another club. All signs point to Real Madrid, which would see him join his friend Jude Bellingham. However, the British defender confessed in an interview that after the Reds, his other favorite team is Barcelona

In a 2021 interview with GQ magazine, he confessed his sympathy for Barcelona and, after confirming his departure from Liverpool, he is now looking for a new challenge in his career and, although it has yet to be made official, it seems that his next destination will be Real Madrid.

“My other favorite team is Barca… I think Barca has the same values as Liverpool, they bring a lot of players through the youth system. I grew up watching them, watching Messi and that special Barca with Iniesta, Xavi, Henry, Eto’o. All those, it was something special,” Alexander-Arnold told GQ.

After confirming his departure from Anfield via social media, Alexander-Arnold did not mention his next destination, but it is expected that having his freedom letter will finalize the negotiation to Madrid.

“This is without a doubt the hardest decision I have ever made in my life. I know many will have wondered why and are frustrated that I haven’t talked about it before, but my intention has always been to be focused on the best interest of the team, which was to win the Premier League,” Alexander-Arnold said in the video posted on his social networks, in which he reiterated that for 20 years, Liverpool has been his whole life and the love he has felt will stay with him forever.

In an interview with the club’s media, the right-back explained that he considered the possibility of staying, but that his desire to seek a new challenge, both personally and professionally, won out.

“It’s not that I don’t think we’re going to fight for titles, because I know the coach is a winner, and you could see that this season. So it’s not that I wasn’t confident about it, but I felt I needed a change. It’s something I want to try as a person and as a footballer, to go somewhere else to prove myself,” Alexander-Arnold said after announcing his departure just days after winning the title with Liverpool.
