The controversy around Shedeur Sanders doesn’t stop, and it seems his days may be getting darker. Currently, he’s the third-string quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, but reports this week suggested that practice squad QB Bailey Zappe was being given more consideration by head coach Kevin Stefanski than Sanders.
Shedeur Sanders was once projected to be a first-round pick in the recent NFL Draft, but he fell all the way to the fifth round, selected 144th overall by the Browns. This Sunday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Sanders told the Baltimore Ravens he did not want them to draft him.
His reasoning was simple: Sanders didn’t want to join a team with an established, two-time MVP quarterback like Lamar Jackson, where he believed he would have zero chances to play. That’s why he supposedly turned down the Ravens.
Alex Smith, former NFL quarterback, criticized Shedeur Sanders
According to Schefter, the Ravens were set on drafting Sanders with pick No. 141, but after hearing from him that he didn’t want to go, they passed. Just three picks later, the Cleveland Browns took the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback.
After this leak, criticism came pouring in. Among the strongest voices was former NFL quarterback Alex Smith, who blasted Sanders by saying: “I think this is insane. … At this point you’re in the fifth round. I understand you had higher hopes, but you’ve dropped to the fifth round and you’re thinking about being a starting quarterback the next year. I think this is incredibly shortsighted.”
For now, Sanders remains the Browns’ third-string QB, sitting behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel. It will be very difficult for him to get an opportunity, but depending on what happens in the next draft, Kevin Stefanski may want to see what he has in his young quarterbacks. That could eventually open the door for Sanders-but for now, the future looks tough.
