Alex Morgan wins icon award at ESPYs, but her dress might be the real winner

Former U.S. Women’s National Team star Alex Morgan had everyone talking at the 2025 ESPY Awards – and it wasn’t just because of the award she took home.

Morgan was honored with the ESPYs’ Icon Award on Wednesday night, recognizing her trailblazing soccer career, Olympic and World Cup victories, and lasting influence on the growth of women’s sports. She shared the honor with fellow legend Diana Taurasi, making it a milestone evening for two of the most influential athletes of their generation.

But as much as fans celebrated Morgan’s moving speech, the internet had its own favorite moment: the dress.

Fashion Moment or Full-On Cultural Reset?

Morgan’s red carpet look – a shimmering silver-and-black gown by LaQuan Smith – lit up social media just as quickly as she once sprinted past defenders. Sleek, sculptural, and undeniably fierce, the dress blended classic glamour with a modern edge. It didn’t take long for the praise to pour in online.

“She’s an icon,” one fan posted. “Mother is mothering,” wrote another. Countless others simply posted photos with fire emojis, letting the look speak for itself.

Outlets like People, Elle, and E! News were quick to spotlight the moment, with Elle calling the look“a fearless fusion of elegance and power.” Even Vogue chimed in via Instagram Stories, noting how Morgan“owned the carpet the same way she owned the pitch.”

Of course, the fashion wasn’t the only standout. In her acceptance speech, Morgan reflected on her 15-year career with the national team – a journey marked by trophies, activism, and camaraderie. “I grew up on this team,”she said. “What I got in return was so much more than medals – it was about the support, the lessons, and the impact we were able to create together.”

Morgan retired from international play in 2024, but she hasn’t slowed down. Between her foundation work, her role with San Diego Wave FC, and rumored broadcasting opportunities (The Athletic reported early talks with several networks), Morgan continues to shape the future of sports.

And if Wednesday night proved anything, it’s that her spotlight is just getting started.
