Alex Cora finds his own Juan Soto for the Boston Red Sox in Roman Anthony

When Juan Soto was seeking his massive contract, in addition to the New York Mets, the Boston Red Sox were one of the teams in the final stretch to sign the Dominican during last season’s free agency. It’s no secret that the Massachusetts team made the best offer, though it ultimately didn’t succeed.

The Red Sox offered Juan Soto more millions, and he turned it down

SNY‘s MLB insider Andy Martino reported on March 7 that, “according to sources,” several teams were willing to top a high offer, but Juan Soto ultimately chose the Mets for the “family atmosphere” provided by Alex Cohen.

The Red Sox were prepared to pay more than the $765 millionSoto signed for in New York, which only underscores how strongly the franchise wanted to acquire him.

In the end, the deal didn’t materialize, but they may have an answer within their organization, as Alex Cora himself drew comparisons between Roman Anthony and the Dominican star.

In an article by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Cora noted that Anthony reminds him of a young Juan Soto at the plate, though without his distinctive style. The manager believes the young prospect consistently has strong at-bats, stays composed, and impresses even when he doesn’t get a hit.

While Anthony, 21, is batting .283 with an OPS of .836 and 4 home runs, Soto, at 19 in 2018, batted .292 with an OPS of .923 and 22 home runs. This doesn’t mean the young Red Sox player won’t become a superstar, but he’s still far from the level of the current New York Mets star.
