Jannik Sinner is not giving up and is still fighting to finish the season in first place in the ATP rankings. The Italian, who was crowned champion at the Vienna Open, has cut the gap with Carlos Alcaraz to 840 points in the entry list and 2,050 in the Race 2025.
The two will meet again this week in Paris where the last Masters 1000 of the season is being held. They could only meet in a hypothetical final because they are on different sides of the draw as top seeds.
The accounts are clear and the number one is in Alcaraz’s hands regardless of Sinner’s results. If Carlitos is one of the two finalists on Sunday, November 2 at the Defense Arena, he will be the leader of the men’s circuit for the second time at the end of the season. It should be remembered that he has reached 10 finals in a row.
The trophy that accredits this condition would be received from the hands of Andrea Gaudenzi, president of the ATP, during the first days of the ATP Finals in Turin (November 9 to 16 at the Inalpi Arena)
In the other scenarios in which Alcaraz does not reach the last round in Paris, he would need to win a match at the ATP Finals. This is assuming that Sinner wins everything.
If he falls in the debut in the TMS, with the winner of the match between Cameron Norrie and Sebastian Baez, he should win three duels to secure the scepter. If he reaches the last 16 or quarter-finals, two wins in Turin would be enough and, if he reaches the semi-finals, one match won in the ’round robin’ would certify his condition as the best player on the planet.
44 weeks at number one
Alcaraz begins his 44th week as world number one, overtaking Guga Kuerten. He is now the 14th player with the most time at the top. He could lose that status in Paris if Sinner wins the title and he is not in the semi-finals. The battle continues.
