A’ja Wilson should be the 2025 WNBA MVP, and Aces coach Becky Hammon explains why

A’ja Wilson’s season has positioned her as one of the candidates for the 2025 WNBA MVP award. And her coach, Becky Hammon, couldn’t agree more.

After the Las Vegas Aces‘ matchup against the Washington Mystics on Saturday night, where the 29-year-old center shone, the coach had nothing but praise for her.

Wilson, Hammon’s MVP

A’ja’s performance stole the show at CareFirst Arena. Her 36 points in 33 minutes were not easy to ignore. She also added 13 rebounds, two steals, two blocks, and one assist for an 81-91 team victory.

And her numbers this season back her up: she averaged 23.2 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. The confidence she has instilled in the team and her teammates has been evident, and in her coach as well.

After the game, Becky reflected to the press on Wilson’s performance, stating that she is the gold standard:

“Anytime a media person has to ask a question, ‘who’s as good as A’ja Wilson,’ that’s where you start with the conversation, that’s your answer. That’s your answer,” the coach began.

“She’s top three in every major statistical category, but most importantly, efficiency. She’s number one in efficiency. And to me, people need to do that kind of homework,” Hammon said.

She also highlighted her star player’s performance, stating that she had discussed her numbers with the group, something she doesn’t usually do, but explained her reason: “I don’t want her to think I’m missing her. And I don’t want the world to miss her because she’s here, she’s right now, she’s in her prime and she’s killing it.“

Currently, the Aces have a 24-14 record and are in third place in the WNBA standings and second in the Western Conference, behind the Minnesota Lynx.

Now, they will look to extend their 10-game winning streak in their next game, as visitors to the Chicago Sky on Monday, August 25, at Wintrust Arena.
