The 2025 WNBA Finals are set. The Phoenix Mercury are back in the championship game for the first time in over a decade, while the Las Vegas Aces are aiming to win it all again just like they did back-to-back in 2022 and 2023. But with the Finals approaching, the major story being spotlighted has nothing to do with either team.
After getting eliminated by the Mercury, Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier got everyone talking by taking aim at WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert with an extremely strong statement calling out the “lack of accountability from the league office“. That stemmed from a comment Engelbert made during the offseason to Collier saying that “only the losers complain about the refs“. War has been waged, and Collier’s fellow league mates are taking note.
A’ja Wilson fully supports Napheese Collier in scuffle with WNBA Commissioner
In perhaps the most important backing Collier could get, WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson addressed the situation following the Aces semifinals victory. Wilson made it clear: she is on Collier’s side.
I was honestly disgusted by the comments that Cathy made. But at the same time, I’m very appreciative that we have people like Phee in our committee of players’ association representing us, because that’s what we are going to have to continue to make the push to stand on what we believe in. I’m grateful to have those types of people be able to continue to speak up for us.
Clearly, Wilson doesn’t like the way Engelbert and the WNBA is handling the complaints of players. For a long time, players have expressed concerns about player safety due to poor officiating around the league. Engelbert and the WNBA don’t see it the same way, and it seems they are far apart in their relationship with the players.
