AJ Brown sparks debate among Eagles environment: Some say he’s lost speed

AJ Brown didn’t play the full season last year. He missed more than four games, yet still managed to surpass 1,000 receiving yards with the Philadelphia Eagles. And even more impressive, every time he was on the field, the team didn’t lose.

There was a perfect connection between the quarterback and the wide receiver, to the point where they became key pieces in last season’s championship run. And looking ahead to this year, they have a strong chance to repeat, though their rivals won’t make it easy.

Despite those strong numbers and his three-season tenure with the team, some analysts are beginning to suggest that Brown may be approaching a critical turning point.

What’s starting to worry analysts about AJ Brown

In Jeremy Fowler’s recent ranking of the NFL’s top 10 wide receivers, AJ Brown came in at No. 5. While that placement appears impressive, there was an underlying tone in the comments that raised questions about his near future.

He’s still awesome… He comes up big when you need him, and he’s still incredibly strong and fast enough. A nightmare to tackle. Maybe a tad slower than he was, but that’s slight.

Said a veteran AFC scout to Fowler.

At first glance, the comment might not seem alarming, but is that really what the scout meant

It doesn’t appear to be the case. Brown recorded his third-best season in terms of yards per reception during his professional career. That’s hardly a sign that he’s losing ability or speed.

Claims like these seem more like speculation than well-founded analysis. Brown continues to post elite numbers and solid stats that firmly place him among the NFL’s best wideouts.

If Jalen Hurts and AJ Brown maintain the level of chemistry and performance they’ve displayed so far, there’s every reason to believe their stats will continue trending upward shortly.

The 2025 season opener for the reigning champions

The Eagles, reigning Super Bowl champions, will kick off their 2025 season on Thursday, February 4, against one of their most hated division rivals, the Dallas Cowboys. That opening game will offer a first glimpse at whether the team still has what it takes to defend its title, or if a decline could be on the horizon.

Perhaps the Cowboys, who currently remain a mystery in terms of their competitive level, aren’t the best measuring stick. Still, the matchup will help gauge how the Eagles shape up heading into the season and where they stand on the field.

What’s certain is that both the team and head coach have the tools to make another postseason run, and potentially earn a return trip to the Super Bowl. Firstly, they need to beat very good opponents such as the LA Rams, Detroit Lions, Washington Commanders, and the Green Bay Packers. Teams that have a lot to demonstrate this year.
