Prior to the 2025 NFL Draft, Jacksonville Jaguars already had some plans to add players to bolster their roster. They moved up from fifth to second to select Travis Hunter from the Colorado Buffaloes.
Before the Draft, Hunter stated that he would not play for a team that would not allow him to play two ways and the Jaguars would not be the ones to limit him. In fact, they already had a plan to bring him in: on both sides of the ball.
However, Travis will start at wide receiver and then, as the summer progresses, move on to learning defensive back. This was confirmed by NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe: “It was explained to me that he will specialize in offense and have a secondary specialization in defense, but the long-term goal is for him to specialize in both aspects, as he did in Colorado” he said.
The news shocked one of his teammates
This plan does nothing but stir the hornet’s nest by changing the team’s direction at the position and making a drastic and important roster decision: the release of wide receiver Gabriel Davis.
The former Buffalo Bills player had joined the team during the 2024 offseason and his release brings financial consequences to the team. Davis had signed a $39 million contract earlier in the preseason for three years. But by releasing him, Jacksonville will now absorb a $20.3 millionhit to the salary cap.
The 26-year-old had to sit out seven games last season due to the injury to his left knee after tearing his meniscus and having to undergo surgery in November.
During the 10 games he played for Jaguars, he had 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns, although those numbers are down from his numbers in his final season with Bills. In 2023, he recorded 45 receptions for 746 yards and seven touchdowns, and overall, he totaled 183 receptions for 2,969 yards and 29 touchdowns in 74 games.
Now, Travis Hunter and Brian Thomas Jr.-former LSU Tigers who led the FBS in touchdown receptions in 2023 and was selected in last year’s Draft in the first round-lead the Jacksonville Jaguars’ wide receiver room.
