One of the most recognisable voices in the world of boxing, commentator Adam Smith, has confessed to having suffered from health problems recently, and the news was heartbreaking, as he revealed that he was diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of bladder cancer in 2023
Smith, the “Voice of Boxing”, underwent a CT scan and biopsy which revealed a large tumour in the wall of his bladder, the British newspaper dailymail.co.uk reported.
Smith explained that the doctors he visited told him he was “about four days” from death, due to fears of potential kidney failure.
In an emergency six-hour operation, he had 19 lymph nodes removed from his body, as well as his bladder and prostate. This was followed by three and a half months of chemotherapy, which led to a miraculous recovery.
Smith’s recovery and return to boxing
Since leaving Sky after 30 years, Smith returned to commentate on his first major televised fight with DAZN, in the blockbuster Oleksandr Usyk vs Tyson Fury showdown last week.
“Whether it’s putting on a four-round fight between two debutants or a world title fight, I love it all and I’m grateful to do that job, if you can really call it a job,” Smith told DAZN.
Cancer was brutal, it has been very difficult to fight this disease. I went through very dark times and my body has been through hell.
“My doctors saved me, my family brought me back. I spent three and a half lonely months in hospital under treatment. I was very lucky to make it. I’m very lucky to be alive and I have a different outlook on life after what happened to me,” Smith added.
“I wake up in the morning and I’m happy, I’m not stressed. I’m delighted to have another day.”
Smith now volunteers at a food bank in west London and has also raised money for Blood Cancer UK, the British website reported.
