The Las Vegas Aces led the WNBA Finals 4-0 over the Phoenix Mercury. They had just knocked out the Seattle Storm and Indiana Fever, with this last opponent making things a little difficult for Becky Hammon’s team.
The Indiana tried to keep their dream alive in the playoff semifinals by forcing a Game 5 against the Aces, but they were eliminated 107-98 at Michelob Ultra Arena. Now, a Las Vegas star has praised her rivals.
Chelsea Gray highlights Fever’s 3-star play
The Fever did not finish the season as they had hoped. With six players missing from the playoffs, Kelsey Mitchell out with rhabdomyolysis, and Aliyah Boston ejected after receiving her fifth foul, Indiana was unable to defeat the Aces. But they put up a fight.
Even with eight of their teammates on the bench, they managed to stretch the game into overtime, and although they didn’t get the win, their rival Chelsea Gray didn’t hesitate to praise them.
The 33-year-old point guard admitted in a conversation with Sue Bird that“Seattle and Indiana prepared us for Phoenix, honestly.” As for the five games against the Fever, Gray did not hesitate to highlight three strong figures who stood out against them:
“You have Indiana, super fast, with Kelsey Mitchell downhill. Defending in your grill, Lexie Hull. You have a presence inside with Aliyah Boston, that’s gonna be a bruiser. They’re aggressive defensively,” she said. Chelsea then highlighted Kelsey’s great performance and elaborated: “Mitchell downhill… defending in your grill… they’re aggressive defensively.”
Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Aces had their big parade to celebrate their third championship on October 17, which ended at Toshiba Plaza in front of T-Mobile Arena.
A’ja Wilson, Hammon, and Chelsea Gray addressed the crowd and expressed their gratitude and affection for the people who showed their support throughout the year.
Meanwhile, Gray finished the year averaging 11.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists with the Aces.
