The Las Vegas Aces are one win away from their third championship in four years after beating the Phoenix Mercury for the third consecutive time.
Becky Hammon’s team clinched the 90-88 victory on Wednesday after A’ja Wilson sank her shot with 0.9 seconds left, breaking the 88-88 tie and, of course, following her coach’s single, concise order.
Wilson reveals the five words Hammon said to her.
During Game 3, A’ja had a great night, scoring 34 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists in 38 minutes. Her teammate, Jackie Young, also contributed to the victory with 21 points and nine assists.
Jewell Loyd, who added 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench, and Chelsea Gray with 11 points and five assists complete the list of players who scored in double digits.
For their part, the Mercury put up a fight led by DeWanna Bonner with 25 points, Satou Sabally with 24, and Kahleah Copper with 17, but they couldn’t stop the Aces.
Meanwhile, what caught everyone’s attention at PHX Arena was A’ja’s last and decisive shot, which she managed to sink after shaking off Bonner and Alyssa Thomas to give Hammon’s team its third victory.
After the game, the seven-time All-Star Game revealed to ESPN that it was her coach who gave her a simple and concise order before the game: “Just go get it done.” And A’ja obeyed to perfection.
Wilson shot 11 of 20 field goals and 11 of 12 free throws and averaged 27.7 points and 12.7 rebounds over the last three games.
Meanwhile, Game 4 will be played this Friday, again at PHX Arena. The Aces will take the court knowing they are one win away from a new championship. Meanwhile, the Mercury will have to find a way to achieve victory if they want to continue fighting for the championship.
