The Giants are in a Shakespearean debate of to be or not to be. Russel Wilson made a lot of noise with his signing or the eternal debate of whether Jason Dart will be the future of the franchise. While they are still debating, in their backfield they have a gem: Tyrone Tracy Jr.
This second-year NFL running back was included by Bucky Brooks (NFL.com) in this season’s All-Breakouts team, after accumulating 1,123 total yards and six touchdowns in his rookie year
Tracy Jr. could break the leagues in PPR format
What really elevates the value of Tracy Jr. is the context: a new veteran quarterback, an offense with more rhythm and spacing, and a constant evolution in his role as a dual weapon.
Facts over fiction. Tracy caught 38 passes for 284 yards in 2024, in just his second year as a running back (he was previously a receiver). If the Giants’ aerial offense improves slightly with Russell Wilson, as expected, that will translate into less tight defenses and more safety targets for Tracy on screen, option and swing routes.
Nothing tells us that his average of 4.4 yards per carry will go down. To this we must add 50 or more receptions. We would be talking about a RB2 with a view to being RB1 in PPR format with a high floor and explosive ceiling
New York’s backfield has five quality running backs
The Giants’ depth chart shows five running backs. Even so, the path for Tracy is clear:
Cam Skattebo and Devin Singletary are behind, and neither projects a serious threat to a workhorse role
Tracy is the type of player who can surpass 1,200 total yards if he stays healthy and consistent.
And yes, the talent is there. Not only did Brooks say it; Tracy himself has said it, who in OTAs made it clear that his priority is consistency, that magic word that separates useful players from essential ones.
“In the NFL, everybody wants your spot. There’s no safe zone. So I’m working every day to earn the trust of the staff and my teammates,” said the young running back.
Some are dazzled by names like Malik Nabers or roll the dice to see if Jaxson Dart will debut soon. That’s not the answer.
The real difference for the team is in its backfield. Tracy Jr. already has volume, talent and a defined position. He knows what he has to do and he does it well
