Abdul Carter’s two words are the rally cry Giants fans needed

Abdul Carter’s two-word hype post–“One sleep”-was meant for Friday night. But as the Giants’ preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills kicks off, it’s clear the rookie linebacker wasn’t just talking; he was preparing to back it up.

In his first NFL action, the No. 3 overall pick has already flashed the speed and instincts that turned heads in training camp. On Buffalo’s opening series, Carter showed quick pursuit on the edge and closed off a run lane-reminding fans and coaches why the Giants made him a priority in April’s draft.

Carter’s jump from Penn State star to NFL rookie hasn’t been a slow climb. Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen told the New York Post earlier this week that Carter“finds ways to get to the football” and has a “natural feel to dip, to lean, to bend.” That skill set is translating in real time as New York tests its retooled defense.

A Debut Worth the Build-Up

Carter was already riding momentum from a standout training camp. His competitive edge was on full display when he told reporters, “I’m putting it all on film. I’m going out there, I’m playing, I’m doing what I do best.” Now, with the Giants defense on the field in live action, that promise feels like more than just talk.

New York’s defense needs the lift. After finishing 3-14 last season, head coach Brian Daboll is under pressure to turn things around, and the franchise is banking on rookies like Carter to be difference-makers. Early snaps today suggest he’s up for it.

Meanwhile, the quarterback battle continues to share the spotlight. Rookie Jaxson Dart and veteran Russell Wilson are both seeing time under center, with coaches evaluating chemistry and decision-making in live situations. But on the sidelines, Carter’s energy has been hard to ignore-he’s animated between plays, talking with veterans, and already acting like a leader.

There’s also the symbolic weight of his jersey choice. Carter originally wanted Lawrence Taylor’s legendary No. 56, but after Taylor advised him to carve his own path, the rookie embraced No. 51. Seeing him make early plays in that number could be the start of his own iconic chapter.

As the game unfolds, one thing is becoming clear: Carter’s preseason debut isn’t just about potential-it’s about proof. If his first series is any indication, his “One sleep” message might have been underselling just how ready he is to be the heartbeat of the Giants’ defense.
