Aaron Wiggins isn’t willing to let chance at NBA Finals success pass him by

As the NBA Finals approach, Oklahoma City Thunder forward Aaron Wiggins reflects on the team’s remarkable journey and the unshakeable bond that has helped propel them to the biggest stage in basketball.

“Living the dream, in the NBA Finals. We’ve had a great season, we’re a great team, and we want to finish the job and win the championship,” Wiggins said with confidence.

The Thunder‘s rise over the past two years has been nothing short of impressive.

“Two seasons ago, we played in the play-in tournament. Last year, we made the playoffs. It’s been a long journey, but it’s important to keep improving and continue growing,” Wiggins explained.

The team’s development is not only reflected in wins and losses but also in the camaraderie and chemistry cultivated behind the scenes.

“We added a few players to our roster, like Isaiah Hartenstein and Alex Caruso. Over the years, our chemistry has also grown, and we’ve improved as a group,” Wiggins noted.

This tight-knit group spends much of their time together outside the spotlight.

“We see each other every day, we go to each other’s houses. It’s a city with limited things to do outside of coming to practice or playing games. We just watch game film, hang out together, practice… we’re just locked in on basketball.”

Wiggins doesn’t believe the Thunder are benefiting from being in a small market

When asked if the team would be more distracted if they played in a bustling city like New York, Wiggins was clear.

“No, we’d stay focused, but obviously the opportunities to go out and do things would be broader. It would be different.”

On days off, some teammates still choose to practice, while others relax by playing video games or spending time with family. Wiggins singled out teammate Jaylin Williams as the group’s undisputed video game champ.

“Everybody knows it, he loves video games.”

Despite being a small-market team, Wiggins emphasized the unwavering support the Thunder have received.

“Everyone supports us a lot, from day one since I arrived four years ago. Other teams go through tough times sometimes, but we always have their support.”

Wiggins also touched on a common misconception about small-market teams, particularly in the Finals.

“You can’t sleep on small markets – this is the NBA. Everyone wants their shot, young players want opportunities, and these small markets give you that – the chance to grow and build something,” he said.

“You don’t need big-name stars. If you find good players and build something with them, you can make noise in the NBA. Both Indiana and us are proving that.”

Both teams have built their rosters through patient development and smart acquisitions rather than relying on superstar draft picks.

“They’re doing it the same way we are – finding players, building a team. Not necessarily with the highest draft picks or with superstars. Building it day by day, season by season. Gaining confidence, being ready to prove ourselves.”

When asked which Indiana Pacers player he’d pick for the Thunder, Wiggins responded.

“Everyone will say Tyrese Haliburton or Pascal Siakam. I’d probably go with Tyrese.”

As for who gets the last shot for the Thunder, his answer was simple.

“Shai. And if he’s not on the floor? I’d pick ‘Dub’ (Jalen Williams). And if not, I’d take the shot myself.”

Looking ahead to the Finals, Wiggins kept it straightforward.

“I don’t know – the best team wins,” Wiggins concluded.

“Maybe seven games – OKC Thunder.

“To be there in the finals is electric, exciting, and we’re going for it.”
