Aaron Rodgers won’t save the Saints: Craig Carton calls out front office for ‘calamity of mismanagement’

NFL analyst Craig Carton did not hold back during his recent appearance on Breakfast Ball, where he openly mocked the idea of Aaron Rodgers joining the New Orleans Saints and slammed the franchise’s front office for what he described as “a calamity of mismanagement.” According to Carton, the Saints‘ problems go far deeper than who’s playing quarterback, they stem from a string of poor decisions that have left the team without direction or long-term stability.

“The Derek Carr contract was nuts when it was signed,” Carton said, referring to the former starter. “Now he shows up with a shoulder issue after four months off? No one saw that coming? No backup plan? This is what separates smart front offices from the lost ones.”

Tyler Shough: a gamble at QB

With Carr’s health in question and no Rodgers rescue on the horizon, the Saints are turning to rookie quarterback Tyler Shough, selected No. 40 overall in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Shough, who played for three college programs over six seasons, is known for his strong arm and pocket presence, but questions remain about whether his long college journey has truly prepared him for the speed and complexity of the NFL.

Behind him, the depth chart includes Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener, neither of whom showed promising signs in 2024. For now, it’s clear that Shough is being positioned as the team’s best hope for a fresh start.

A critical season ahead

The 2025 season will likely define the future of the Saints, both on the field and in the front office. If Shough succeeds, he could be the long-awaited replacement the franchise has searched for since Drew Brees‘ retirement. But if he falters, all eyes will turn to the 2026 draft class, which conveniently features Arch Manning, the grandson of Saints legend Archie Manning.

One thing is certain: the Saints can’t afford another year of chaos. For now, fans are left to hope that a rookie quarterback and a shaken roster can rise above what Carton calls “a front office failing at every level.”
