The New York Giants were all-in on snagging Matthew Stafford from the Los Angeles Rams this offseason, only to watch him spurn their hefty offer and sign a restructured deal to stay in LA on February 28. But in a twist no one saw coming, the Giants are now eyeing Aaron Rodgers, the soon-to-be-ex-Jets quarterback, to fix their QB woes.
Stafford, a Super Bowl champ with 57,608 career passing yards and 368 touchdowns, was the Giants’ golden ticket after a dismal 3-14 season. They dangled a reported two-year, $90-$100 million deal with big guarantees, per The Athletic. The Rams, fresh off a 10-7 NFC West title in 2024, weren’t letting their guy go easy, though.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news: “The Rams and Matthew Stafford reached agreement today… quashing all trade speculation.” Rams coach Sean McVay doubled down on Fitz and Whit, saying, “There’s no discrepancy on us wanting him to continue to lead the way.” Ouch, Giants-rejected!
So, what’s Plan B? Enter Aaron Rodgers, the four-time MVP who’s about to hit free agency after a rocky two years with the Jets. At 41, he’s coming off a 2024 season with 3,897 yards, 28 TDs, and a 5-12 record-not stellar, but still a big upgrade over New York’s Daniel Jones era. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini spilled the tea: “The New York Giants are now shifting their interest to Aaron Rodgers. They’ve been discussing it all week in Indy.” Yep, while the NFL Scouting Combine hummed in Indianapolis, the Giants were plotting a shocking pivot.
Rodgers emerges as Giants’ Plan B
Why Rodgers? GM Joe Schoen’s desperate to swing big-he said so himself at the Combine-and with the No. 3 draft pick, they could pair a rookie with a vet. Rodgers even reached out to the Giants, per NBC Sports’ Mike Florio, hinting he’s keen to stay at MetLife Stadium.
Fans on X are buzzing-one post nailed it: “Giants going from Stafford to Rodgers is peak chaos.” But it’s not all rosy-Rodgers’ age and off-field baggage raise eyebrows. Still, his arm and IQ could jolt this offense, ranked 28th in passing last year.
