Aaron Rodgers tests the Steelers’ patience, and now one of their legends is seriously ticked off

The Pittsburgh Steelers‘ quarterback saga has NFL fans on edge as the 2025 season approaches, and Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger is stirring the pot with his latest comments about Aaron Rodgers. On the April 29 episode of his podcast Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, the two-time Super Bowl champion expressed doubts about Rodgers signing with Pittsburgh, despite the persistent rumors linking the four-time MVP to the team.

“I don’t know what that looks like, to be honest with you. I truly don’t. At some point, you have to say, ‘What’s best for our team is to just probably move on.’ And that might sound crazy because it’s Aaron Rodgers, but at some point you start to question, ‘Does Aaron really want to play?‘”, Big Ben said.

Rodgers, a free agent since the New York Jets parted ways with him in March 2025, has kept everyone guessing about his next move, and Roethlisberger isn’t buying the Steelers hype just yet.

Rodgers has been spotted working out with new Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf, a move that fueled speculation about his intentions. However, Roethlisberger questioned the quarterback’s commitment, asking, “Why would you go throw with DK, working out, and blast it to everybody that ‘I’m throwing to these guys,’ but you won’t sign?”

He added, “I’m wondering what the reason is that he hasn’t signed yet,” suggesting Rodgers might be waiting for a more lucrative or strategic opportunity. The Steelers have been vocal about their interest, with owner Art Rooney II noting at the annual league meeting in Palm Beach, Florida, “We keep hearing that he’s headed in our direction.”

Roethlisberger wonders why Rodgers won’t sign with Steelers

At 41, Rodgers remains a polarizing figure in the NFL. On The Pat McAfee Show, he debunked rumors about demanding a massive contract, stating, “I told every single one of the teams I talked to, it ain’t about the money-I’ll play for $10M’s.” Despite his willingness to take a pay cut, his hesitation to sign has left Steelers fans restless.

The team’s draft strategy adds another layer of intrigue-they waited until the sixth round to select Ohio State’s Will Howard, a developmental quarterback with potential but not immediate starting caliber. This move suggests Pittsburgh is either banking on Rodgers joining or sticking with current starter Mason Rudolph, who led them to a 10-7 record in 2023.

Roethlisberger also proposed an alternative, noting the Steelers might consider a trade for a veteran quarterback like Atlanta’s Kirk Cousins if Rodgers doesn’t commit soon. Rodgers’ indecision, paired with his public workouts and cryptic comments, keeps the NFL rumor mill churning, and Roethlisberger’s doubts only amplify the drama surrounding Pittsburgh’s quarterback hunt.
