Aaron Rodgers gets closer to making Steelers decision but it may be too late for Pittsburgh

No one knows what’s going through Aaron Rodgers‘ mind. That’s true at the moment and has been true for a long time. Seemingly since the end of his time with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers’ personality changed into being more carefree, unwilling to follow with society’s norms. Since then, though, success on the football field hasn’t really followed him.

His final season with the Packers was a disappointing losing season. His first year with the New York Jets was cut short just four plays in. Then came 2024, when the Jets went 5-12 with Rodgers and then kicked him to the curb following the season. Since then, Rodgers has made no assurances that he’s going to continue playing football. Despite interest from a few teams and Rodgers confirming he has met with the Pittsburgh Steelers, nothing seems imminent on the contract front.

Will Steelers keep letting Aaron Rodgers string them along or will they call it quits after June 10?

The Steelers continue waiting for Rodgers. It feels like a foregone conclusion he will sign with Pittsburgh given the team hasn’t made any significant moves at quarterback this offseason. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero has splashed cold water on that notion, as he wonders whether the Steelers want to keep getting strung along by a player.

There is gonna come a time where there is so much time lost, does it make sense for the Steelers – a blue blood type of organization that has never been kind of strung along by a player?… There’s all these signs that he’s coming, but he has not affirmatively said, ‘Hey, June 9th, book me the ticket. I’m coming in and I’m gonna join this team’. That has not happened as of this point. [The Steelers] are operating as if the guy is gonna be there.

It’s fair to wonder just how much patience the Steelers will have for a 41-year-old quarterback who hasn’t played at an elite level since 2021. In Pelissero’s eyes, the next “checkpoint” for the Steelers-Rodgers situation is June 10, when the team begins its mandatory minicamp.
