Aaron Rodgers’ future in limbo: Why Steelers demand answer before NFL Draft

The offseason saga surrounding veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers has entered a critical phase this spring, with the Pittsburgh Steelers publicly setting a firm deadline for his future in the league. The four-time NFL Most Valuable Player remains undecided about returning for the 2026 campaign, leaving one of the NFL’s most storied franchises in limbo as the draft approaches.

Rodgers, 42, originally signed a oneyear contract with Pittsburgh in June 2025 after a long offseason filled with speculation following his departure from the New York Jets. That decision came late in the process and forced the Steelers to open their season with uncertainty at the game’s most important position.

Despite a strong performance that led to a 10-7 record and an AFC North title, Rodgers has not publicly committed to another season. His hesitation has left the team planning for multiple scenarios, as the quarterback position remains central to their aspirations.

Team leadership has made their position clear in recent days. Steelers president and coowner Art Rooney II told reporters at the NFL’s Annual League Meeting that the franchise expects Rodgers to inform them of his intentions before the start of the 2026 NFL Draft, which is scheduled for April 23 in Pittsburgh.

“I would say by the draft, I expect an answer,” Rooney said, signaling that the organization is unwilling to extend Rodgers an indefinite window to decide his future. This ultimatum highlights the urgency for the Steelers, who must prepare to either retain their veteran leader or pivot to a younger option.

Steelers plan for all scenarios

While Rooney‘s comments underscore the urgency, head coach Mike McCarthy, who coached Rodgers for 13 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and helped him win his only Super Bowl, has maintained steady communication with the quarterback throughout the offseason.

McCarthy has described his conversations as regular and positive, though he has also made it clear that the team must prepare for life without Rodgers if necessary. He has already been exploring potential backup plans, emphasizing that the Steelers have “a system of player acquisition” for multiple outcomes.

With Rodgers‘ decision still in flux, Pittsburgh is weighing a range of alternatives. Backup quarterbacks like Mason Rudolph and secondyear player Will Howard are on the roster, but neither is a proven longterm solution.

Meanwhile, the Steelers hold the 21st overall pick in the draft, which could allow them to target a young quarterback if Rodgers opts for retirement or signs elsewhere. Their draft capital is limited, but selecting a quarterback could help secure the team’s future beyond the 2026 season.

As the April draft draws near, the pressure is mounting for a definitive answer. For a franchise with championship aspirations, the next few weeks could define not just Pittsburgh’s 2026 campaign but also the long-term trajectory of one of the NFL’s most critical positions.
