Aaron Rodgers’ former teammate reveals what Patrick Mahomes does differently in practice

The statistics haven’t necessarily been there, but Patrick Mahomes is still considered by most to be the best quarterback in the NFL. It’s been that way since his MVP season in 2018. There have been other MVPs since then – in fact, two have won it twice (Lamar Jackson and Aaron Rodgers) – but Mahomes has been the one who performs best in the postseason.

Mahomes is certainly unique in the way he plays, but his arm talent has frequently been compared to Rodgers. The two are incredible when it comes to throwing off-platform or outside of the pocket. While the physical traits are similar, their on the field actions are not, it seems.

Robert Tonyan loves the way Patrick Mahomes reaffirms the team during practice

According to Robert Tonyan, who has played with both QBs, there’s one thing Mahomes and Rodgers are extremely similar in: making jaw-dropping throws. Tonyan says that both of them can “make every single throw imaginable on the field”. Where Mahomes seems to differ from his fellow QB is on the practice field. Mahomes’ personality and energy as a leader constantly shines through.

He’s very confident. He’s very positive, like reaffirming. Even if we’re just going through little tight-end drills on the side, or running backs, we’re running through the pads or whatever, he’s encouraging us. That’s just a leader you want, just constantly making noise and being positive and creating that energy.

Tonyan had the best season of his career with Rodgers, during the 2020 season where Rodgers won his third NFL MVP award. Tonyan caught 11 of Rodgers’ 48 touchdown passes, but his next season was cut short by a torn ACL. Tonyan was never the same and had one-year stints with the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings in 2023 and 2024.

Tonyan signed on to the Chiefs’ practice squad at the tail end of last season, and he’s hoping to make more contributions in 2025. He’s currently the team’s third-string tight end, behind Kelce and Noah Gray.
