Aaron Donald teases NFL comeback: could he join the Rams with Micah Parsons?

Recent social media activity has sparked speculation about a potential return to professional football by former Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, amid the ongoing trade request of Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons.

Parsons, recognized as one of the NFL’s elite defensive players, has publicly expressed frustration with stalled contract negotiations as he approaches the final year of his rookie deal.

His formal trade request has intensified discussions about his future with the Cowboys and potential landing spots elsewhere.

An altered Instagram image showing Parsons in a Rams uniform drew attention from Aaron Donald, who responded by suggesting he might come out of retirement if the Rams were able to acquire Parsons.

Parsons acknowledged Donald‘s comment, fueling rumors about a possible reunion of two of the league’s top defensive talents.

Donald, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year (2017, 2018, 2020), ended his playing career following the 2023 NFL season.

Despite initially considering retirement after the Rams‘ victory in Super Bowl 56, he remained active for two additional seasons, finishing with a strong performance that earned him First-Team All-Pro honors.

His final season included eight sacks, demonstrating his sustained high-level play.

The Rams‘ defense during the 2023 campaign benefited from a strong front seven that combined emerging talents like Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse with younger players Braden Fiske, Byron Young, and Kobie Turner.

Donald‘s presence had been instrumental in anchoring the defensive line and mentoring these players.

Over a 10-year NFL career, Donald recorded 111 sacks, forced 24 fumbles, and achieved 21 pass breakups, earning Pro Bowl honors every season.

His career achievements culminated with the Rams‘ Super Bowl 56 title. Upon remaining retired, Donald is projected to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2029, his first year of eligibility.

The possibility of Donald returning hinges on the Rams‘ ability to secure Parsons via trade. Such an acquisition, combined with Donald‘s potential comeback, would considerably bolster the Rams‘ defensive strength.

However, these scenarios remain hypothetical as contract talks between Parsons and the Cowboys continue without resolution.

There would also be a significant change in the Rams‘ locker room should Donald return. His departure hit that franchise hard, especially after he was their leader for so many years.

It took a while for the Rams to essentially come out of mourning after his retirement, with the positive shoots of progress only starting to show at the end of the 2024 campaign.

With a stacked roster heading into 2025, coupled with a rejuvenated Sean McVay, there may not be the space for Donald that there once was.
