Yankees manager Aaron Boone‘s decision to bench Jazz Chisholm Jr. in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the Red Sox sparked strong controversy, even within the team’s former player community.
The controversy was sparked after the Yankees’ 3-1 loss, and former outfielder and YES Network analyst Cameron Maybin was one of the most critical, calling the move “unacceptable”.
Aaron Boone receives harsh criticism
Maybin took to social media to express his fury, stating that Chisholm “should be pissed off”. His outrage centered on the fact that the second baseman, who had just completed a historic season, was treated “like a platoon player”.
“The guy just had a 30-30 season and then to be treated like a platoon player is unacceptable. He’s the third player in Yankees history to have a 30-30 season,” he added.
Boone’s justification
Boone justified his decision by pointing out that Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet is especially tough on lefties and that he preferred a right-handed bat, such as Amed Rosario, who had a good track record against the pitcher.
Beyond the explanation of the Yankees manager, the truth is that his decision was highly questioned and did not leave anyone happy or satisfied.
