Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman’s future with the Yankees hinges on 2025

The New York Yankees’ season ended the way it has too often lately: with disappointment. The Toronto Blue Jays ended their playoff run in Game 4 of the ALDS, leaving Yankee fans once again asking the big question: When will No. 28 finally come home?

In August, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal hinted that big changes could be on the horizon if the team came up short again. But earlier this week, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand suggested the opposite, that neither manager Aaron Boone nor general manager Brian Cashman was in danger.

Now that the dust has settled, Rosenthal’s latest reporting leans toward calm over chaos: Boone and Cashman are expected to stay.

Steinbrenner’s Trust Runs Deep

According to Rosenthal, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner isn’t looking to make dramatic moves. Since taking over in 2008, he’s never hired another general manager besides Cashman, who’s been with the team since 1986. Their relationship, built on decades of trust, weighs heavily on every major decision.

Boone, meanwhile, continues to have the respect of his players, especially captain Aaron Judge. Insiders say Judge has been one of Boone’s strongest allies in the clubhouse, and his voice carries weight.

Rosenthal also noted a key reality: the market for elite managers and executives isn’t deep right now. “Replacing them with someone better isn’t guaranteed,” he wrote in The Athletic. In other words, the Yankees might not find anyone who can actually improve the current situation.

The Clock Is Ticking, Quietly

Even so, Boone’s time might be running on a quiet countdown. He’s now finished eight seasons in New York, and history shows a pattern: both Joe Torre and Joe Girardi lasted about ten years before their time ran out.

Boone’s current deal runs through 2027, and Cashman’s goes to 2026. Neither is in immediate danger, but sources told ESPN and Yahoo Sports that 2025 could be the year when patience starts to wear thin, especially if the Yankees miss the World Series again.

For now, Steinbrenner appears committed to stability. But in the Bronx, that only lasts as long as the wins do. Boone’s not on the hot seat yet – but the seat is definitely warm.
