Three weeks have passed since the official start of NFL free agency, and several teams have slowly been rebuilding for the upcoming season. However, one player making headlines for the wrong reasons is Trey Lance, former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys.
No NFL team has shown interest in Trey Lance, who was a first-round pick for the 49ers in 2021. According to reports, his career is in jeopardy, but he might have an opportunity-outside the United States.
Trey Lance draws Interest from a Canadian Football League Team
Despite not having any interviews with NFL teams, Trey Lance has caught the interest of a team in the Canadian Football League (CFL) as a possible way to continue his career if he cannot stay in the United States.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have added the NFL free-agent quarterback Trey Lance to their negotiation list. This means the Roughriders hold the exclusive rights to negotiate a contract with the North Dakota State University product.
One important factor to consider is that Trey’s father, Carlton Lance, played for the Roughriders in 1993. His family is already familiar with the team, so if he is unable to remain in the NFL, Trey might consider this option.
The NFL has been harsh on Trey Lance
It’s no secret that the NFL is a tough league-one where players can shine quickly but also fade just as fast. Trey Lance was the 49ers’ first-round pick in 2021 and received his opportunity to start in 2022. However, an injury in Week 2 against the Seahawks sidelined him for the rest of the season, and he never got another chance.
Last year, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys, where he became the team’s third-string quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. It wasn’t until the final game of the season against the Washington Commanders that he had the opportunity to start. While he didn’t perform badly, his future in the NFL remains uncertain.
