A Super Bowl winner with the Dallas Cowboys mentions the key to returning to former greatness

Jimmy Johnson, the Super Bowl-winning head coach with the Dallas Cowboys, said the “number one key” to the Dallas Cowboys’ success is something the team struggled to achieve during the disappointing 2024 NFL season. Without a doubt, the successful coach knows what it takes to build a winning team. Johnson guided the Miami Hurricanes to a national title before taking his talents to the NFL.

Johnson is enshrined in Cowboys history and is a member of the team’s Ring of Honor, so when he shares his thoughts on the franchise, it’s worth listening to. Recently, Johnson spoke about the key points for the Dallas franchise to be successful again during the 2025-26 season and his “number one key” is something the team struggled to do during its disappointing 2024 campaign.

What did the Dallas Cowboys stop doing in 2024 to reach the Super Bowl?

Johnson recognizes that the team lacks the depth that other elite teams in the league have, so the most important thing for Dallas is to stay healthy, especially when looking at the historically difficult stretch the team faces in the second half of the season. “They have very high salaries. Because of that, their 53-man roster may not have as much talent at the base as some of these other teams,” Johnson said.

In addition, they have a very difficult run towards the end of the season. So, if they’re not 100% when they play against the best teams, in the second half of the end of the season, it will be a problem. That’s why staying healthy is the main key. Last season, the Cowboys suffered numerous injuries: Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland and several other All-Pro talents were forced to miss playing time due to injury.

No team can overcome that kind of loss, so it’s important for Dallas to make sure they take care of their players from the start of the season so that everyone can play at their best when crunch time finally comes. If they do that, Dallas has a good chance of making the playoffs.

The Dallas Cowboys will have the usual three preseason games:

  • August 9 vs LA Rams
  • August 16 vs Baltimore Ravens
  • August 22 vs Atlanta Falcons

Their season opener will be the kickoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 4 at the home of the current NFL champions.
