A sad day for Wembanyama that brought him to tears

After the loss suffered by the San Antonio Spurs against the New York Knicks in the NBA Cup final, the team’s French star, Victor Wembanyama, broke down in tears during the postgame press conference, even before receiving the first question from reporters.

This past Tuesday, December 16, the Spurs fell to the New Yorkers by a score of 124-113. For Victor, however, the pain extended far beyond the defeat at the hands of the Knicks, turning the night into an emotionally overwhelming experience.

Sorry.”… “I just lost somebody today.

Victor Wembanyama

Wembanyama said.

According to information provided by The Athletic, the player learned earlier that morning that his grandmother had passed away in France, a loss that deeply affected him and framed everything that followed throughout the day.

Wembanyama was only able to answer one additional question after breaking down and then ended the press conference. He did not feel in the right emotional condition to continue responding to the reporters’ questions as the weight of the news became evident.

Before the game, the Spurs player already knew about his grandmother’s death and still decided to take the court in order to support his team. He did not start the game, but he was able to play and record 18 points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots in 25 minutes of action.

The moment was particularly difficult for the young star, who, given his age, likely holds many vivid memories and always maintained a close relationship with his grandmother, for whom he had deep affection and respect.

Now, being far away and unable to be present during such a painful moment, combined with the timing of the loss, likely intensified his sorrow. The miles separating him from France and the fact that he could not be beside his family surely magnified the feeling of grief and helplessness.

The next games for the San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs must quickly recover from the loss suffered in the NBA Cup and shift their focus forward as the regular season continues to demand consistency and emotional resilience.

The Spurs currently sit in fourth place in the Western Conference with an 18-7 record, meaning they cannot afford to slow their pace. Instead, they must continue pushing to climb even higher in the standings.

San Antonio’s next matchup will be against the Wizards, followed by games against the Hawks and then once again the Wizards. Within that upcoming five-game stretch, the Spurs will also face the reigning champion, the Oklahoma City Thunder, on two consecutive occasions.

The second of those games against Oklahoma City will take place on Christmas Day, adding both significance and pressure to an already demanding stretch of the schedule for a team balancing competitive ambitions with human emotion.
