A report about Pete Alonso’s possible departure from the Mets provokes a fan’s anger

Season after season, there is doubt about the future of Pete Alonso with the Mets. Since his professional debut in 2019, there has been talk that he will leave the team, but so far that has not happened. This offseason is no exception. There are strong rumors that his departure will now become effective.

In the last week, it was reported that the first baseman would have the door open if he did not accept the condition of a lower salary to remain in New York.

Pat Ragazzo published this information in Sports Illustrated. He detailed that the Mets would let Alonso go as a free agent if they did not reach a new salary agreement with him. He added that this report came from “a rival National League scout”. He also said that the team was considering trading Jeff McNeil.

What Ragazzo published upset Ryan Finkelstein of the Locked On Mets podcast. He questioned the veracity of that report, because the source was unreliable. In any case, he argued, it is speculation. He believes there is nothing concrete with Alonso.

A rival National League scout guesses as much as you or I do, which makes me doubt the reliability of information coming from outside the organization

Ryan Finkelstein, Locked on Mets podcast

Finkelstein’s annoyance is based on the facts of what the season was like for the first baseman. While it is true that he did not have a good participation in the 2024 campaign, this year he raised and returned to the level that has generated communion with the fans.

Pete Alonso’s resurgence

OPS of .788, 34 home runs and the lowest output of his career for a full season. Those were the statistics he recorded in 2024. In the 2025 campaign he had an OPS of .871, hit 38 home runs, led the National League with 41 doubles and was named an All-Star. As if that wasn’t enough, he won his first Silver Slugger Award.

Alonso’s rise sets the tone for him to seek better terms for his contract. In this regard, Finkelstein argued that he is an important player for the Mets, but that it is understandable that he could receive offers of larger figures because his performance has priced him out. However, on the version that the organization wants to negotiate his permanence with conditions that are not in line with his present, the podcaster indicates that it is out of touch with reality.
