After the surprising departure of Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, the Boston Red Sox could be preparing another high-impact move before the MLB trade deadline.
This time, the protagonist would be the third baseman Alex Bregman, who according to several reports, could be in the trade block if a contract extension is not reached.
Bregman, who signed with the Red Sox last offseason, has an opt-out clause in his $120 million contract at the end of the current campaign. With the possibility of losing him without receiving anything in return, Boston’s front office would be willing to explore his value in the trade market.
Where will Bregman play next season?
Journalist Jeff Passan noted on Seattle Sports that teams such as the New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, New York Mets and Chicago Cubs could be potential destinations, although he acknowledged that a trade between the Yankees and Red Sox would be unlikely due to their historic rivalry.
It’s going to be interesting because we have to look at other teams that need solutions at third base. I don’t know if the Yankees and Red Sox would ever make a deal like that, but the New York Yankees could certainly use a third baseman.
“I don’t know if the Detroit Tigers would be willing to pay for this, but perhaps the most inconsistent position for the Tigers has been third base and they were also finalists to sign him this winter,” Passan added
Despite the uncertainty in the infield, particularly with Jazz Chisholm Jr.‘s role, a deal between the Yankees and Red Sox would be unusual, to say the least. However, Passan did not entirely rule out that possibility.
“I don’t know if the New York Mets are going to need him. Surely, the Mets have the finances to do it. Then there’s the Chicago Cubs, another team that was in the running to sign him this winter, probably the best team of all the ones I’ve mentioned so far,” concluded Passan.
Red Sox Restructure
The future of Alex Bregman will largely depend on whether the Red Sox can convince him to sign an extension before the trade deadline. If not, his departure could be another sign of rebuilding in Boston, which already surprised the league by parting ways with Devers.
For now, the market remains expectant. Bregman, at 30 years of age, is still a valuable piece for any team hoping to compete in October.
