A player puts Aaron Boone in a tough spot, and now he has to make a decision that could be crucial for the Yankees

The New York Yankees need the best version of every player right now. As long as this happens, they can maintain the strong streak they’re currently on, keeping them on a steady path toward the MLB postseason.

If a player who previously underperformed starts delivering, it could create a “good problem” for Aaron Boone, as it would add more depth to his bench. This might be the case with Austin Wells.

Austin Wells puts Aaron Boone in a big dilemma

The Yankees’ catcher, Austin Wells, was limited to playing just 11 games throughout the entire month of August. His role was mostly confined to defensive substitutions, ultimately taking on a backup position.

That’s why when Wells recently got the chance to start against the Tampa Bay Rays, he made the most of it. He knew that to earn Aaron Boone’s trust, he needed a strong performance, and he delivered against the division rival.

Austin Wells hit two home runs on Wednesday night, but what truly stands out is the pitchers he hit them against. The first came off Dre Rasmussen, who specializes in preventing home runs, while the second was against one of the best relief arms, Pete Fairbanks.

After the game, Wells spoke to the media about his time as a backup, showing honesty by saying that “if it’s what helps the team,” it’s the role he’ll accept. However, it’s hard to imagine his production going unnoticed by Aaron Boone, who now faces a significant dilemma about who to use at the catcher position.

That said, one game alone isn’t enough to make definitive decisions, so Wells might return to his backup role while waiting for another opportunity to shine.
