A painful departure in Cleveland will make things even harder for Shedeur Sanders

It is no secret that playing for the Cleveland Browns can be more of a career filled with frustration than with joy. If anyone needs proof, they can ask Myles Garrett. The defensive star signed a massive contract extension, yet he knows that good results are far from guaranteed with the franchise.

Many players share that same feeling. That is why, for those who have the opportunity to leave and search for a more competitive team where they can contribute their talent, the idea becomes a priority.

With the arrival of Todd Monken to the organization, it seemed the roster would receive a fresh and renewed outlook following the departure of Kevin Stefanski. However, for some players, that does not appear to be the case.

Tight end David Njoku decides to test free agency

David Njoku spent nine years playing for the Browns. The 2025 season will be his last with Cleveland. At 29 years old, and after arriving through the draft, he now wants to test free agency in 2026.

Cleveland, first off I love you.”…”These 9 years have been a beautiful journey. I’m am so grateful for all the memories we shared together. Thank you to The Haslams, Andrew Berry and the whole browns organization for everything!! All my teammates I shared the battle with I’m so grateful for you guys. The time for me to find a new home has come and all I can think of is just the gratefulness in my heart. The city of Cleveland will forever be home #ChiefOut.

The player shared the message in a post on Instagram.

If he ultimately leaves the team, Njoku would depart with outstanding numbers, ranking among the most productive players in franchise history.

  • 9 years in Cleveland
  • 4,062 receiving yards, twelfth best in team history
  • 34 touchdowns, sixth best in franchise history
  • 118 games played, including 88 starts
  • 384 receptions, third among all-time Browns pass catchers

He joined the team in 2017 as the franchise’s first-round pick. After spending his first four years with the organization, he signed a four-year, $56.75 million extension that, at the time, made him the highest-paid player at his position.

Injuries have been present in recent seasons, particularly in 2025, when a pair of setbacks limited him to just twelve games. Now he intends to test free agency in search of a better opportunity as he looks toward the remaining years of his professional career in the NFL, hoping to find a more stable and competitive environment.
