The competition for the starting quarterback position within the Cleveland Browns seems to find new ways to become even more bizarre. There are four players vying for the role, with two rookies and two veterans in the mix, but now the team has decided to sign another QB, which could lead to a surprise cut.
This is nothing but bad news for Shedeur Sanders, who many consider a highly talented player but has been relegated to the fourth option in this quarterback room.
Cleveland Browns sign Tyler Huntley
NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Tyler Huntley, aged 27, has signed with the Browns after also doing so during the previous offseason. Back then, he made the 53-man roster after training camp but was released shortly after due to a lack of interest in a potential trade.
The Baltimore Ravens brought him back to their practice squad, but this reunion was short-lived as the Miami Dolphins signed him after their starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, suffered a concussion in Week 2. Huntley started five games for Miami last season.
Huntley returns to Cleveland to join an already crowded but injury-plagued quarterback room. Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel are dealing with hamstring issues, while Shedeur Sanders is nursing shoulder discomfort.
Huntley joined the Ravens in 2020 as an undrafted free agent from Utah and had limited action in his rookie year. Over time, he established himself as the primary backup to Lamar Jackson, starting nine games when the two-time MVP was absent.
In his 20 appearances with Baltimore, he completed 64.6% of his passes for 1,957 yards, with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, while also contributing 509 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Curiously, he was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2022 despite starting only four games, in which he threw three interceptions and just two touchdowns. His selection came after another player’s withdrawal.
