A historic home run and an unusual play on the night of September 25, 2025, keep the New York Mets in the fight in the MLB 2025 season.

The Mets have three games remaining and are in the third and final Wild Card spot, one game ahead of the Cincinnati Reds.

Historic home run and unusual play keep Mets in the fight

Francisco Lindor hit his 30th home run of the 2025 Major League Baseball season, becoming the fifth player with at least 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in this year’s MLB campaign in the eight-run, five-run victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

The unusual move

In the first inning, the New York Mets placed two runners in scoring position at third and second base respectively with one out, when Mark Vientos, the designated hitter for the Metropolitans, hit a foul fly ball down the third base line where both Matt Shaw, the third baseman for the Cubs, and Dansby Swanson, the shortstop for Chicago, ran to try to catch it in foul territory

As the two got closer, Matt Shaw collided with Dansby Swanson and fell down. Dansby Swanson managed to stay on his feet long enough to catch the ball as it fell into the stands. As he fell, Dansby Swanson quickly threw the ball to Matt, who threw it home to put out Francisco Lindor at the plate.

But baseball rule 5.07(b)(3)(C) states that “if a fielder, after making a legal catch, steps or falls into any out-of-bounds area, the play ends and each runner advances one base, without the risk of being put out, from the last base he touched at the time the fielder reached the out-of-bounds area.”

Francisco Lindor scored, while Pete Alonso advanced to third base and then also scored on a hit by Brandon Nimmo.
