A Golden State Warriors veteran is becoming the best ally of Steph Curry game

The Golden State Warriors’ Christmas Day win over the Dallas Mavericks offered another reminder that their veteran core is still capable of setting the tone, and it also highlighted the growing importance of one of the newest pieces in Steve Kerr‘s rotation.

Center Al Horford, a proven champion and one of the league’s most reliable all-around veterans, is quickly becoming a steady motor for the Warriors as they navigate the grind of the season.

Stephen Curry led the way with 23 points in the 126-116 victory at Chase Center, but the depth and balance of Golden State‘s lineup stood out just as much. Seven Warriors scored in double figures, and the bench provided a major lift. De’Anthony Melton and Horford combined for 30 points off the bench, with Horford delivering one of his most impactful performances of the season.

A great return to the lineup for Horford

Horford returned to the lineup after missing seven games due to sciatica and wasted little time making his presence felt. Subbing in midway through the first quarter, he immediately recorded a steal on one end and knocked down a three-pointer on the other. He went a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc in the opening quarter, scoring 12 points in just five minutes as the Warriors erupted for 40 first-quarter points.

That stretch underscored what Horford brings to Golden State beyond the box score. His ability to stretch the floor forces defenses to respect him on the perimeter, creating space for Curry and the Warriors‘ shooters. At the same time, his defensive awareness and positioning help anchor second units and stabilize lineups that lean heavily on movement and ball sharing.

Jimmy Butler, another veteran who thrives on smart, unselfish basketball, emphasized Horford‘s impact after the game. Butler pointed to Horford‘s high basketball IQ, floor spacing, rim protection, and competitive approach, noting that he is simply fun to play with because of how he moves the ball and commits on both ends of the floor.

Efficiency rather than volume is the key for Horford

Horford finished the game with a season-high 14 points while adding four rebounds, two assists, and two steals in just 11 minutes. Those numbers reflect efficiency rather than volume, and that efficiency is precisely what makes him valuable to a Warriors team built around rhythm, spacing, and decision-making.

For Golden State, Horford’s championship mentality may end up being just as important as his on-court production. He has been through deep playoff runs, understands how to manage games, and brings a calming presence that resonates with other veterans such as Curry and Butler. That experience can be invaluable, especially for a team with postseason aspirations that relies on execution and trust.

As the season continues, Horford‘s role may not always come with heavy minutes or headline stats, but his influence is becoming increasingly clear. By providing floor spacing, defensive intelligence, and a professional approach every time he steps on the court, Al Horford is giving the Warriors exactly what they need: a reliable veteran motor who helps elevate those around him and keeps Golden State moving in the right direction.
