A giant helping another achieve his dream: Shaquille O’Neal helps a young man become a police officer

It is well known that Shaquille O’Neal has carried out humanitarian actions over the years. He likes to help whenever he can, whether with money or with gestures that make moments better for people.

Over time, his reputation for generosity has extended beyond the court, shaping a public image rooted in empathy and responsibility. Whether appearing quietly or publicly, these efforts are driven by a consistent desire to uplift others, especially during moments of personal uncertainty. Friends, fans, and officials often note that such involvement is not performative but deliberate, reflecting values he has emphasized since his playing days.

That context frames why this particular gesture resonated, as it aligned naturally with a pattern of service rather than a one-off act tied to seasonal attention and community-focused commitments sustained over years within his broader life.

And this time was no exception. The former Lakers player, among other teams, left his good deed of the holiday season by becoming the angel of a 24-year-old young man who once sought to become a professional basketball player and, after failing, turned toward his calling to serve.

However, things did not go well on the first attempt. Jordan Wilmore, a 7-foot-3 young man, unable to become a basketball player, decided to pursue his other passion, which is becoming a police officer.

With his height, he would become the tallest officer in the Kemah Police Department, but unfortunately he did not pass the entrance exam. He fell just one point short of the goal, as the minimum required to enter was 70 and Wilmore scored 69.

At first I was down, but I thought, you know, I’m still young. You fail, you get right back up. Can’t be too quick to quit.

He told a local Texas outlet.

Shaquille O’Neal learns of the case and looks for Jordan Wilmore

Upon learning of the situation Jordan Wilmore was going through, Shaquille O’Neil contacted Kemah Police Chief Raymond Garivey to offer the very tall young man support while he prepares again to retake the exam.

I want him to really focus on this because it’s commendable that a kid wants to be an officer. I love cops. They made me who I am.

Shaquille O’Neal

O’Neal said.

In my 34-year career, I’ve seen others fail, but I also see others give up. Once they’re done, they’re done. That’s not the case here. He wants to serve.

Raymond Garivey

Garivey said of Wilmore.

“I found out about him through jealousy.”…”I thought I was the tallest, handsomest cop in the world.

Shaquille O’Neal

I wanted to just let him know he’s got my full support. I’m going to be on you, brother, make sure you get it done.

Shaquille O’Neal

O’Neal told KHOU

Jordan Wilmore played college basketball at Missouri, Northwestern State, and Austin Peay State University.
