A doctor gives his verdict: Does Jokic have an anterior cruciate ligament injury?

Nikola Jokic left the court limping late in the first half Monday night and did not return after sustaining a left knee injury during Denver Nuggets‘ matchup against the Miami Heat, shifting the focus from the 147-123 loss to the health of the franchise cornerstone.

The incident occurred in the final seconds of the second quarter when Jokic awkwardly hyperextended his left leg while defending near the basket. He immediately went down, clutching his knee as the arena fell silent. Medical personnel attended to him on the floor before assisting him to the locker room.

Although Jokic walked off under his own power, a noticeable limp prompted the team to rule him out for the remainder of the game. Nuggets head coach David Adelman addressed the situation briefly postgame:

“All I know is it’s just a left knee injury,” Adelman said.

Jokic ended the night with 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting, alongside five rebounds and eight assists, but those stats quickly became secondary as concerns grew about how the injury could affect Denver‘s playoff hopes and Jokic‘s pursuit of a fourth MVP award.

Medical review provides cautious optimism

With no official diagnosis yet released, analysts turned to independent assessments for insight. Brian Sutterer, an orthopedic and sports medicine physician, examined the play and described it as a “lower-severity type of hyperextension” of Jokic‘s left knee.

At the time, Jokic was listed as questionable, which Sutterer suggested was an encouraging early sign rather than an alarming one.

Reviewing the play frame by frame, Sutterer noted that Jokic was shuffling defensively near the basket when forward Spencer Jones inadvertently stepped on his planted left foot, causing the knee to buckle backward beyond its normal range. Jokic remained down briefly before being helped off the court.

“First of all, you’re going to have bone bruising,” Sutterer explained. “That’s painful, but it’s usually something that can recover in a week or two.” Bone bruising can result in soreness and stiffness but typically heals with rest and treatment rather than surgery.

The main concern now is whether any ligament damage occurred, which would represent a worst-case scenario and could sideline Jokic for an extended period. Factors working in Jokic‘s favor include the low speed at which he was moving and the less violent nature of the hyperextension compared to typical ligament tears.

Denver plans to conduct additional testing and imaging on Tuesday to provide a more definitive update on Jokic‘s injury and potential recovery timeline, giving fans hope that the injury may be less serious than initially feared.
