A college misunderstanding may explain the icy distance between Tiger Woods and Greg Norman

A newly resurfaced college anecdote might explain how Tiger Woods and Greg Norman‘s uneasy dynamic began long before they became headline fixtures.

The story came from Conrad Ray, Woods‘ Stanford teammate, during an appearance on “Skratch University.” Ray recalled the early days of Tiger‘s freshman year, when Woods was still just a teenager sharing a dorm room with a stranger who had no connection to golf.

Ray explained that Tiger‘s roommate at the time was “some random guy from Virginia that didn’t even know what golf was.”

That lack of awareness led to a misunderstanding that would become legend among Tiger‘s Stanford circle. The moment happened as Woods was preparing for his first Masters appearance as an amateur-an enormous milestone in any golfer’s journey.

According to Ray, the roommate answered a phone call meant for Woods. On the other end of the line was Greg Norman, already a towering figure in global golf, calling to set up a practice round with the young phenom.

The problem was that the roommate had no idea who Norman was and forgot to pass along the message.

“His[Tiger Woods] roommate was some random guy from Virginia that didn’t even know what golf was. And it went on to-Tiger‘s playing in the Masters that year-and he got a call from Greg Norman to schedule a practice round. And the guy didn’t know who Greg Norman was, and he forgot to pass along the message,” Ray told Dan Rapaport.

A strained dynamic that lingered long after college

While a missed phone message hardly seems like the beginning of a rift, Ray suggested that the moment became part of a broader pattern.

Through the years, Woods and Norman rarely appeared publicly connected, a surprising fact given their shared status as two of the sport’s most recognizable figures. And when Tiger‘s triumphant 2019 Masters win brought past champions and rivals together in celebration, the chill between the two surfaced again.

Norman revealed in an interview with Men’s Health that he’d attempted a heartfelt gesture after Woods‘ victory. He hand-wrote a congratulatory note, drove it to Tiger‘s home, and delivered it to the guard at the gate.

“Very few people know this: when Tiger won the Masters this year, I wrote him a handwritten note and drove down my road, maybe a quarter of a mile, and hand-delivered it to his guard at his gate. I said, ‘Hey, this is Greg Norman here. I’ve got a note for Tiger – can you please hand-deliver it to him?’ Well, I never heard a word back from the guy,” Norman said.

“When I won my first major championship, Jack Nicklaus was the first person to walk down out of the TV tower and congratulate me. I don’t know – maybe Tiger just dislikes me. I have no idea. I’ve never had a conversation with him about it.”
