A Browns rookie criticized for offering only “a firm handshake and intangible qualities”: Is it Shedeur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel?

Rarely has a fifth-round pick stolen the spotlight as much as Shedeur Sanders and his fight for the starting position with the Cleveland Browns.

As a promising prospect who looked like he was going to be selected in the first round, falling to 144th was something even Sanders himself did not expect. Added to this is the fact that the team’s strategy during the event baffled both fans and rivals, as they selected two quarterbacks despite already having two veterans in the position and Deshaun Watson as the starter, albeit injured.

Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett were joined by Dillon Gabriel, who was acquired by the Browns during the third round of this year’s draft with the 94th pick, even before the former Colorado Buffaloes QB. And his rivals will not make it easy for him, as they all want the same thing.

However, as this dispute unfolds, one analyst believes that things will be simpler than expected, but one of them will end up in last place.

The prediction that does not favor rookies

Vic Tafur of The Athletic not only thinks that the veterans will take the top two spots, but also that in the battle between Sanders and Gabriel, it will be the former Oregon player who will finish fourth on the depth chart. And he took a hard shot at him:

“Shedeur Sanders should get a much-needed win and beat out Dillon Gabriel for the No. 3 job, as the Browns will learn you can’t draft a short quarterback in the third round just because he has a firm handshake and intangibles,” Tafur wrote.

During his college career, Dillon led the Ducks to a flawless season (13-0), reaching the Rose Bowl and finishing third in the Heisman Trophy voting last season, throwing for 3,857 yards and 30 touchdowns. In addition, he was selected well ahead of Shedeur in the draft.

However, Sanders finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting and produced 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns as he and Travis Hunter inspired the Colorado Buffaloes to reach the Alamo Bowl.

In addition, recent reports of his performance have indicated that in training with the Browns, it has been Shedeur who has stood out.

However, if Tafur’s words come true, it is likely that the team will not keep all four QBs, so in the future, Sanders’ or Gabriel’s place could be hanging by a thread.

Despite these speculations and predictions, Kevin Stefanski and Cleveland have not yet made the difficult decision, and no one is sure how the situation will unfold.
