While the boxing world in Mexico focused last week on the fight in which the country’s top exponent of the sport, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, was surprisingly defeated by Terence Crawford by unanimous decision at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, this week the news is not about boxing stars and not about something that happened in the ring.
On Monday, September 15, a lifeless human body was found on the road to San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, wrapped in a blanket and covered with brown tape. The exact height where the Colectivo Buscando en San Luis R.C. Sonora and the Madres Buscadoras found the body was in the desert area of the road to the Gulf of Santa Clara, which is located on the border between Sonora and Baja California, almost in the northwesternmost part of Mexico.
Who was Jesus Ivan Mercado?
The lifeless man was a boxing prospect, 21-year-old Jesus Ivan Mercado Cabrera, originally from Ciudad Obregon and with a career ahead of him in professional boxing. He had been reported missing a few days earlier and after several people passing through the area were surprised and reported an abandoned bundle, the body of the athlete was found. He had a fight scheduled in Hermosillo, the capital of the aforementioned border region of Mexico.
In his fledgling professional career in the bantamweight division, ‘Rafaguita‘ had a not very good record of seven wins, nine losses and one knockout in 16 fights.
How was Jesus Ivan Mercado located?
“The young man who was found lifeless has been recognized by his relatives and they will begin the corresponding procedures to give him a Christian and dignified burial. RIP Jesus Ivan Mercado Cabrera. We thank each person who took the time to react and share our publication. Thanks to all of you, he will return to his family, thanks to you for supporting by sharing and showing empathy for the suffering of others,” wrote the collective Buscando en San Luis R.C. Sonora on Facebook.
The identity of the body found was established due to the tattoos that Jesus Ivan Mercado, nicknamed ‘Rafaguita’, had on his skin. He had this nickname on his skin, as well as other tattoos that included the Santa Muerte, the Mexican Pacific League baseball team Yaquis de Ciudad Obregon, Leean, Sofia Yoselyn and Km.
