The San Francisco 49ers just won’t sit still. After grabbing wideout Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this week, the Niners have swung another deal, this time with Washington. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 49ers are acquiring running back Brian Robinson Jr. for a sixth-round pick.
Robinson, a third-rounder out of Alabama in 2022, made headlines early in his career after a shooting incident sidelined him for part of his rookie season. He came back strong, putting up 797 yards across 12 games. Last season, he followed it up with 789 yards and eight touchdowns, splitting carries in a crowded Commanders backfield.
A Different Role in San Francisco
This won’t be the same job description for Robinson. In Washington, he had starter reps. In San Francisco, he’s expected to be the steady backup to Christian McCaffrey. Given McCaffrey’s recent Achilles injury that cost him most of 2024, the Niners clearly want reliable insurance.
Adding Robinson means San Francisco won’t have to lean as heavily on McCaffrey’s every-down workload, which has been a recurring concern. In his last healthy season, McCaffrey was on the field for more than three-quarters of the Niners’ offensive snaps.
Why the Trade Works for Both Sides
For the 49ers, it’s about balance – adding a proven power back who can take pressure off their star and keep the run game humming. For Washington, it’s about clearing space in the backfield and stacking draft picks as the new regime under Dan Quinn reshapes the roster.
Robinson now steps into one of the NFL’s most creative rushing attacks, and Shanahan’s system has turned plenty of good backs into great ones. Whether Robinson thrives as McCaffrey’s complement could be one of the more underrated storylines heading into 2025.
