18-year-old boxer dies in Crans Montana fire after saving a friend

Several days after the tragedy in Crans Montana, a fire in which at least 40 people died and more than 100 were injured, authorities are continuing the difficult task of identifying the deceased.One of them is the 18-year-old boxer Benjamin Johnson, whose death was announced by the Swiss Boxing Federation. “With deep sadness we learned of the death of Benjamin Johnson, a member of the Lausanne Boxing Club, who died in the tragedy on January 1 in Crans-Montana,” it said in a statement.

According to the president of the Federation, Amir Orfia, Benjamin “was a promising athlete and a brilliant personality. I watched his development while he was still in the ring and later as his coach. I will remember him as a positive, smiling and respectful young man.”

It has also emerged that the sportsman lost his life while rescuing a friend, whom he saved. “This last act of altruism perfectly reflects his character: he was always willing to help others,” said the president.

This is the second athlete to die in this tragedy after the young golfer Emanuele Galeppini.
