Guerschon Yabusele is not having a good time in the NBA. Thepower forward, formerly of Real Madrid, is living a nightmare with the Knicks with accusations of unprofessionalism, being overweight and very low sporting performance, with a testimonial presence in the New York team.
But leaving the United States is not on his mind, at least not for now. In a chat with YouTuber Just Riadh, Yabusele explains the economic benefits of playing in the NBA and what it means for a player and their family for the rest of their lives.
“If you play three years in the NBA, you get a lifetime pension. After four seasons, medical expenses are covered for life,” Yabusele explained in the interview, before confessing the real motivation that keeps him in the American league: “And after five years, medical coverage is extended to the whole family. I want to play five years here in the NBA so that my family can benefit from that lifetime medical care. You never know what can happen in life.”

A fifth season secured
In the summer, he has a $5.7 million player option, so it’s easy to guess what will happen with his future and that he will have that fifth season in the NBA that he so desires. He was with the Celtics between 2017 and 2019, joined the Sixers after the Paris Games, in which he dazzled with a block on LeBron James, and is in his fourth season with the Knicks.
“I’m not going to lie: It’s hard,” Yabusele recently admitted. With hardly any minutes and having to listen to professional and personal criticism almost daily, it seems that Guerschon’s only motivation is to secure his family’s future on all levels.
