The number one item on the list of prohibited items at the official The Masters Tournament website isn’t guns, knives, or alcohol. It’s not even large bags.

The very first thing that is completely banned: cell phones.

“Part of what makes the Masters such a unique environment is the absence of phones on the grounds,” the tournament’s official site states. “Courtesy phones are available throughout the course.”

The policy also covers other electronic devices:

“Electronic devices (cell phones, laptops, tablets, beepers, drones and others), including those capable of transmitting photos or video.”

The only exceptions are certain smartwatches and fitness trackers. But when it comes to cell phones, the rule is crystal clear: you cannot bring them. If you’re caught, you can be removed from the premises – and in some cases, banned for life.

Former British Open champion Mark Calcavecchia found out the hard way when he was recently ejected for using his phone during the tournament.

Why Augusta National bans cell phones

Augusta National Golf Club wants to preserve the tradition, mystique, and exclusivity that define the Masters. It’s the same reason official merchandise is only sold inside the gates.

The goal is for fans to experience the tournament without distractions – focused entirely on the golf, not on recording every shot or snapping photos with their phones. In Augusta, the experience is about being present, not documenting it.

This policy also reinforces the classic spirit of the game, where the focus stays completely on the action instead of on screens.

“The origin of it all goes back to the founding of the club,” explained Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley. “The goal has always been to serve the game of golf.”

Can you make a phone call at the Masters?

Yes. The tournament provides complimentary phones for spectators, located in various areas around the course, including the main entrances.

Can the media use cell phones?

Not on the course. Members of the media are only allowed to use them inside the media center. They must leave their phones there before heading out to the grounds.

Are cameras allowed?

Only during practice rounds (Monday through Wednesday), and only handheld cameras. During the official competition days (Thursday through Sunday), cameras are completely prohibited.

In the end, the Masters protects its essence like no other event: fewer screens, more golf.
