The historic FIBA Women’s World Cup record Team USA is chasing
Team USA has a chance to make history at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin.
If the Americans capture their fifth consecutive World Cup title, they will match the record for the longest championship streak in tournament history.
The former Soviet Union currently holds that mark, winning five straight gold medals in 1959, 1964, 1967, 1971 and 1975.
Team USA, which has earned a medal in every World Cup since 1979, can join that exclusive list if it wins the championship game on September 13 and extends its dominant run that dates back to 2010.
The Americans have won the last four editions of the tournament and are looking to cement their place as the most dominant program in international women’s basketball history.

Team USA, led by a star-studded roster of WNBA talent, will look to take another step toward defending its title when it faces Italy on Sunday, September 6, in its second group-stage game of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
The Americans enter the matchup riding the momentum of a dominant 94-61 victory over China in their tournament opener, extending their remarkable run in the competition. The United States, winners of the last four FIBA Women’s World Cup titles, has not lost a game in the tournament since 2006.
Four U.S. players scored in double figures against China, led by Caitlin Clark, who posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists. Her 11 assists set a new record for the most by an American player in FIBA Women’s World Cup history. Rhyne Howard and Paige Bueckers each added 14 points.
The United States is already familiar with Italy this year. The two teams met at the FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Rico in March, where Team USA cruised to a 93-59 victory behind 15 points from Kahleah Copper, one of five American players to score in double figures.
For Italy, the player to watch will be Cecilia Zandalasini, the Golden State Valkyries standout who plays under Team USA assistant coach Natalie Nakase in the WNBA. The veteran forward enters the game in top form after scoring 19 points in Italy’s 63-54 victory over Czechia in its group-stage opener.
Very talented team. Everybody’s going to get up and play their best when they’re playing us
“(Cecilia) Zandalasini’s had an incredible year with the Valkyries. … She can stretch the floor. She can score in the midrange. She has great size. She’s athletic.”
