Various sportsbooks have the Chiefs as clear favorites for the start of the season. The moneyline gives Kansas City an implied probability of 56.6%, compared to Denver’s 43.4%.
The point spread hovers around -2.5 / -3 points in favor of the home team, a moderate advantage that reflects the weight of playing at home but also the respect commanded by the Broncos’ defense.
In the total points market, the line is set at 43 and 43.5 points, with very similar odds between the over and under (1.91 on 43 points, 1.98 on the under). This is a relatively modest total for a game featuring Mahomes, indicating that bookmakers anticipate a more tactical than offensive contest.
The Kansas City Chiefs dominated the AFC West for nearly a decade, but the balance of power finally shifted last season when the Denver Broncos dethroned them.
Now, it is only fitting that the two franchises that have claimed every division title since 2010 meet right away in the 2026 NFL season opener, with Denver traveling to Arrowhead Stadium for a highly anticipated Monday night showdown.
“There’s a sense of urgency when you get somewhere new,” Broncos head coach Sean Payton said this week when discussing the change at the top of the division. “We have a ton of respect for Andy (Reid), his staff and what they’ve accomplished. Our job is to find the right 53 players every season and focus on the details that win games.”
There is no shortage of storylines heading into this AFC West clash.
At the top of the list is the return of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the two-time NFL MVP who missed the end of last season after undergoing surgery in December to repair torn ligaments in his left knee.
Mahomes made a rapid recovery and was cleared to participate fully in the offseason program. Although he looked sharp during practices, Kansas City kept him out of all preseason action as a precaution.
“I don’t know what the best-case scenario is, honestly,” Mahomes said. “I’ve never come back from an injury like this. I’ve never been in this situation before. All I can do is prepare myself the best way I can and get the most out of every single day.”
On the other side, Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is also returning from a major injury. The young quarterback suffered a broken right ankle during Denver’s divisional-round win over Buffalo and underwent surgery shortly after. Following a minor cleanup procedure in April, Nix is ready to lead the Broncos once again.
“He’s like a mountain lion in a zoo that’s just pacing,” Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton said. “Mentally, you can tell he’s thinking, ‘I’m ready to go do this.'”
Mahomes will have a new weapon in the backfield after the Chiefs made a major investment in former Seattle running back Kenneth Walker III, the Super Bowl MVP who joined Kansas City in free agency.
However, the Chiefs enter the matchup with a major concern on the offensive line. Left tackle Josh Simmons will miss the game due to a back injury, a significant setback against a Broncos defense that led the NFL by a wide margin in sacks last season.
Replacing him will be undrafted rookie Khalil Benson, who is expected to protect Mahomes’ blind side in his first NFL start.
“He doesn’t have a lot of reps under his belt, obviously, at this level, being a rookie,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. “But he’s very willing, and if he has to step in there and play, which it looks like he probably will, we feel comfortable with that.”

Denver upgraded its receiving corps by acquiring Jaylen Waddle after sending first-, third- and fourth-round picks to Miami, giving quarterback Bo Nix another elite weapon.
That group will challenge a Kansas City secondary that underwent a major overhaul this offseason. The Chiefs traded Trent McDuffie and lost Jaylen Watson and Brian Cook in free agency.
Kansas City’s biggest addition was cornerback Mansoor Delane, the sixth overall pick in the draft, while veteran safety Alohi Gilman arrived in free agency as a quieter but important addition.
The Chiefs will also be without safety Chamarri Conner, who is sidelined with an injury, adding another challenge for a revamped defensive backfield facing one of the league’s most explosive passing attacks.
