A kicker running a 4.50 forty-yard dash is unheard of, but that’s exactly what Jaffer Murphy did during the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Pro Day on Saturday. His performance has gone viral and gotten people wondering why they had never heard of him before.

Originally from Marion, Iowa, Murphy only spent one season at UTSA as a senior in 2025. He had previously played for Lake Erie College, and also played collegiate soccer at Drake and Florida Gulf Coast. Clearly, Murphy is an all-around athlete.

Jaffer Murphy was stuck behind Michael Petro as starting kicker at UTSA

Murphy didn’t get an invite to this year’s NFL Scouting Combine, mainly because he had no real scoring statistics as a place kicker. His only made kick was an extra point in UTSA’s 57-20 win over FIU in the final game of the season. Murphy was used as a kickoff specialist, as opposed to being the team’s starting kicker for field goals and extra points, which was sophomore Michael Petro instead.

Murphy took part in 88 total kickoffs, recording a touchback on 54 of them. He also recorded two tackles during coverage of his kickoffs, showcasing his versatility. He’s obviously an incredible athlete, so it makes sense he would get his nose dirty on kick returns.

As evidenced by his Pro Day kicking performance, there appears to be untapped potential in terms of pure field goal kicking for Murphy. He was stuck behind a great kicker in Petro at UTSA. But following his Pro Day, he’ll surely get a chance to make a name for himself during the NFL Preseason.
