It is curious that Oleksandr Usyk has been the one asking Deontay Wilder for a fight for quite some time and it still has not been finalized. On paper, the Ukrainian has the upper hand in the negotiation, but without world titles in his possession, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ is more focused on the purse he would receive.
“The Bomber” is already 40 years old and a possible fight against the most successful boxer in the top division in many years would undoubtedly suit him very well, whether he comes out of it well or not. The man from Alabama, one of the most dangerous punchers in heavyweight history, has not been able to get back on his feet since Tyson Fury beat him twice. Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang also got the better of him, and since then he has not exactly impressed against Tyrrell Herdon and Dereck Chisora.
“And in the meantime, Usyk continues searching for an opponent for his so-called “last dance,” and he keeps insisting on Wilder: “Why not? If Deontay’s team wants it, I’ll do it. Money, business… right now we have two options, but whatever is good for me, we’ll take it”, the European fighter told The Athletic.
Usyk wants the curtain to come down in a big fight in the United States, against an opponent who has enjoyed worldwide prestige, and the ‘Bronze Bomber’ can boast of having held the WBC world title for five years. It would be sold as a fight between legends. If it were up to the fans, Usyk would have to face Moses Itauma if he wins the IBF title fight against Filip Hrgovic on August 29, but this generational clash does not seem to be on the table right now.
