Team USA advanced to the World Baseball Classic final thanks to a masterful performance by Paul Skenes. The Pittsburgh Pirates ace pitched a near-perfect game against the powerful Dominican Republic offense, giving his team a 2-1 victory at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida.
Behind a strong outing from Skenes and clutch offense from Gunnar Henderson and Roman Anthony, the United States national baseball team held off the powerful Dominican Republic national baseball team to secure a spot in Tuesday’s championship game.
The victory sends the United States to its third straight final in the World Baseball Classic. The Americans previously won the title in 2017 and finished runner-up in 2023.
Skenes silences Dominican lineup
Skenes delivered a masterful performance against one of the tournament’s most dangerous offenses, allowing one run on six hits over 4 1/3 innings while striking out several key hitters.
The Dominican Republic struck first when Junior Caminero launched a solo home run in the second inning, marking the team’s tournament-record 15th homer.
But the American pitching staff, backed by a steady bullpen effort, shut down the Dominican attack the rest of the way.
Relievers bridged the middle innings before closer Mason Miller secured the win with a tense ninth inning. The Dominicans threatened when Julio Rodríguez walked and advanced to third, but Miller struck out Geraldo Perdomo to end the game.
Henderson and Anthony provide the offense
The American offense broke through in the fourth inning. Henderson tied the game with a solo home run before Anthony followed with a go-ahead blast that ultimately proved decisive.
Defense also played a major role in the tightly contested semifinal. Aaron Judge cut down Fernando Tatis Jr. at third base with a laser throw from right field, while Rodríguez later produced a highlight-reel catch to rob Judge of a potential home run.
Despite the Dominican Republic’s star-studded lineup – featuring multiple recent MVP candidates – the Americans held on for the narrow victory.
With the win, Team USA moves within one victory of its second WBC championship and will face the winner of the semifinal between Italy and Venezuela in Tuesday’s title game.
